title : Memories
I miss..
being the minority among the American majority, my appearance undeceiving - a living portrayal of my origin, an invitation to questions and appraisals from the curious and unknowing; starting anew from ground zero in a foreign country, beginning not from history, but the present; visiting quaint mom & pops, exploring their quirky momentos and exhibits, so unaffected by big-name stores; walking on foreign soil, hoping and knowing that somewhere miles away, I am on others' minds; experiencing a different culture, trying to blend in, mimick their native accent; walking around a campus, it's architecture so geniusly constructed, a castle of sorts; touring local attractions, and then falling deeply, madly in love with Starbucks caramel macchiato; going to supermarkets, gawking in wonder at man's creations, stacked on shelves in aisles, the variety, the affordability. meeting new people, understanding others, thinking how starkly different/similar we are; watching autumn leaves the shades of red, yellow, orange, pile up on the ground, squirrels chasing around, unaffected by their proximities to humans; the hot shower in winter, calming my nerves; sunny California, the hollywood fever; cheap yet branded finds in factory premium outlets; learning that Americans resort to the pill, for any kinds of sickness, pharmacies storing any medicine you can think of; the nation's array of bookstores - Barnes and Nobles, Borders.. even the local Target, perusing the endless volumes of books, wishing I could own them all; free shipping: a bum's way to laze around more, but save on more. Alas! The memories. |
